Photo Vincent Kawaya Mwala Member of Parliament Vincent Musyoka Kawaya has intensified calls for justice after the brutal mob killing of three young men in Machakos county. Kawaya, a known ally of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), spoke on Sunday, June 7 where he warned the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) that residents will not rest until all those responsible are brought to book. Speaking after the arrest of a key suspect linked to the incident, Kawaya expressed outrage over the deaths of Kennedy Muthungu, 29, his younger brother Stanley Muthungu, 22, and their family friend Charles Mutiso, 25, who were allegedly attacked and burned alive by a mob after being falsely accused of attempting to carjack a motorist. “It cannot be life as usual. DCI, wherever you are, you should know we are a sad lot. We demand justice for these three young souls. Whoever conducted this heinous act must be held to account,” Kawaya said. Mwala Member of Parliament Vincent Kawaya Photo Vincent Kawaya Investigations into the killings have since established that the three friends were walking home after a football match when they got into an altercation with a Probox driver who allegedly knocked one of them down. Things took a turn after they confronted the driver, who raised an alarm and rallied boda boda operators, claiming the trio attempted to carjack him. The allegations are said to have triggered a violent response from the operators and members of the public, who descended on the young men, who later succumbed to their injuries. Kawaya, who is increasingly viewed as President William Ruto’s political point man in Ukambani, said the matter would not end with the arrest of one suspect, insisting that every person involved in the killings must face the law. “We will amplify this issue to the point where the one who committed this deed will find it easier to stay behind bars than to be free,” he added. The legislator also challenged the boda boda sector to take greater responsibility for the conduct of its members, arguing that criminal elements should not be shielded under the guise of being operators. Further, the MP r enewed calls for stricter regulation of the sector, including mandatory registration of riders under savings and credit cooperatives (Saccos). “There has to be responsibility, and that is why we are saying every member must be registered to a Sacco,” he added. At the same time, the politician announced plans to take the matter to Parliament, saying he would seek answers from the Ministry of Interior regarding measures being put in place to curb rising incidents of mob justice.
