by Joseph Ogungo on Tuesday, 16 June 2026 – 6:11 pm Police IG Douglas Kanja speaking during a security meeting on Tuesday, June 16, with an insert of unknown individuals attacking All Saints Cathedral Church Facebook KPS Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has directed police commanders across the country to strengthen preparedness and response strategies in the face of what he described as an emerging threat from “goons and criminal gangs for hire.” Speaking during a security preparedness consultative meeting on Tuesday, June 16, Kanja warned that organised criminal groups allegedly available for hire are increasingly being used to cause chaos and disrupt public order. He urged commanders to draw lessons from past security incidents to better protect citizens and maintain stability. “We face an emerging challenge of goons and criminal gangs for hire. We must learn from weaknesses and enhance our strengths,” Kanja stated. Lagat urged police leaders to reflect on the current security situation and identify measures that will enhance the service’s readiness to respond effectively to any challenges that may arise during the election period. Kanja’s remarks come as security agencies intensify preparations ahead of the next election cycle, amid concerns about the rise in criminal gangs used by politicians to cause chaos. Days ago, suspected hired goons were captured on CCTV cameras disrupting a meeting at All Saints Cathedral Church in Nairobi, tormenting and robbing attendees. Although police have made progress in arresting those linked to the attack, some are still walking scot-free, with the authorities intensifying efforts to arrest them. According to one of the suspects, they were hired by a Nairobi MP to disrupt a meeting linked to former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua. Apart from the church attack on Friday, June 12, the use of goons has been witnessed in several rallies organised by politicians, as rival groups always clashed with one another. During a Linda Mwananchi rally in Busia and Kakamega, one person was killed by a mob after he was alleged to be of a rival faction. The incidents come ahead of the 2027 General Election campaign season, with police warning that unchecked goonism could undermine security and public order.
