Photo Kenyans.co.ke Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has put matatu operators on notice, warning that the era of reckless behaviour on Kenyan roads is about to come to an end. Kanja vowed that a crackdown would come during the commissioning of a new administration block at Kiamumbi Police Station along Kamiti Road in Nairobi on June 17,  directing operators associated with the ‘Nganya Culture’ , to either reform or face the wrath of the law. “People of Kenya are free to do their business, but they must do their business within the law. So, if you are in the matatu industry and you are not following the law, then you are in problem,” stated IG Kanja. The crackdown follows the tragic death of Eugene Mutuku, a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student who was pushed out of a moving matatu affiliated to Nicco Sacco and later succumbed to the injuries. Photo Murkomen IG Kanja has confirmed that authorities have since arrested all individuals linked to that incident, with the suspects remining is custody. However, Kanja made clear that the police dragnet is still wide open, with more suspects believed to be in hiding and actively being tracked by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers. “I know we have already arrested some, some are hiding somewhere, but sooner or later we are going to get them, because there is no way to hide in this country as long as we have committed crimes. We will get you, it doesn’t matter how long it takes,” stated IG Kanja. This incident barely came days after the popular Komarock route matatu named “Detat” was involved in a horrific, fatal road crash on Wednesday evening, June 3, along Enterprise Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area, resulting in at least five to seven fatalities and leaving several other passengers heavily injured. Most matatu accidents in Nairobi have largely been associated with the widely popular stunts, which have led to several road accidents within Nairobi. It also comes against the backdrop of the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) boss, Nashon Kondiwa, attributing the flashy modifications, graffiti, and the ‘nyoka nyoka’ behaviour to be merely symptoms of deeper structural issues. As a result, he also stated that NTSA data shows an 11 per cent increase in the number of road accidents in the country, with an additional 11 per cent increase in the number of fatalities, painting a bleak picture of Kenya’s roads. The NTSA has called for nationwide driver retests starting next month, as well as collaboration with transport bodies like KeNHA and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority, to reduce road carnage in Kenya.
