The residents took to Kabula market along the busy highway protesting against the removal of Bumula MP Wamboka Wanami from the Parliamentary Public Investments Committee (PIC). Videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke show the protesters setting tyres on fire on the road, blocking motorists who rely on it, and temporarily disrupting traffic. The residents blocked the highway with burnt tyres, tree stumps, large stones and logs, halting traffic on the road linking Bungoma and Kakamega counties. The protests came hours after Bumula MP Jack Wamboka was suspended from chairing the Public Investments Committee on Governance and Education by the National Assembly. His suspension on Wednesday, April 22, followed numerous complaints lodged by witnesses appearing before the committee, who claimed harassment and extortion from the MP. “In order to safeguard public trust in the work of the Public Investments Committee on governance and education during the pendency of the inquiry, I am further persuaded to suspend the honourable Jack Wanami Wamboka from chairing the committee during the period,” stated Deputy Speaker Gladys Shollei. Among the complaints lodged against the lawmaker was one by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission , which protested what it termed open hostility, harassment, and demeaning treatment of its officers who appeared before the committee. According to the commission, Wamboka demanded bribes as a prerequisite to granting an audience favourable consideration during the committee proceedings. After his suspension, minority leader in the assembly Junet Mohammed was mandated to name an interim chairperson by Thursday, April 23.
