The port is undergoing the construction of a new berth, following an update issued by KPA on Sunday, June 7. According to KPA, the construction of berth 19B is underway as part of a broader strategy to enhance efficiency and accommodate growing demand at the port. “As cargo flows through East Africa’s busiest maritime gateway continue to steadily rise, Kenya Ports Authority is pushing forward with a critical infrastructure projects designed to keep pace with this demand. One of these projects is Berth 19B, a major quay extension currently under construction at the Port of Mombasa,” KPA announced. KPA further noted that the expansion is aimed at addressing operational challenges posed by the increasing number of larger ships calling at the Port of Mombasa, which require deeper channels and longer berthing spaces for efficient operations. Once completed, the berth is expected to add an additional handling capacity of 300,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually, hence boosting cargo handling at the port. The development is part of KPA’s long-term investment plan that is aimed at expanding port infrastructure ahead of demand and strengthening the Port of Mombasa’s position as the preferred logistics and trade hub for East and Central Africa. The expansion comes amid steady growth in cargo traffic through the port, which serves several countries in the region, including Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and parts of northern Tanzania. The port has, in recent months, received several cargoes , with many more expected to come in the coming months. Besides the berth, KPA is also undergoing major modernisation changes in operations and structure at the Port of Mombasa, in a move to secure its position as a climate-smart hub. The authority has quietly rolled out its comprehensive Green Ports Policy, introducing sweeping infrastructure upgrades across East Africa’s largest gateway. Central to the changes is the introduction of a shore power technology system that allows massive international cargo liners to completely turn off their noisy, high-emission diesel engines while docked and plug directly into land-based electricity. Also, the French government announced plans to invest over Ksh106 billion in a new port terminal expansion. The project will focus on renovating and upgrading two terminals at the Port of Mombasa as part of efforts to strengthen Kenya’s transport and logistics infrastructure. The deal is also set to expand port capacity, modernise freight management systems and improve inland logistics networks linking Kenya to the wider East and Central African region.
