NAIROBI, Kenya Jun 23 – Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has announced plans to challenge in court the decision by the Orange Democratic Movement National Executive Committee (NEC) to remove him from the position of Secretary General. Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, Sifuna argued that the process leading to his removal violated the ODM party constitution as well as principles of procedural fairness. The Nairobi Senator said the latest move by the party resembled an earlier attempt made in February, which was also contested in court. “After consultation with our legal teams earlier this morning, it has been decided to once again test the propriety of the purported ouster in the courts because we are convinced it should suffer the same fate as the first one in February,” he said. The NEC had earlier resolved to remove Sifuna from office following recommendations by the party’s Internal Disputes Resolution Mechanism (IDRM), which investigated complaints lodged against him in his capacity as Secretary General. However, Sifuna and his allies insist the process was flawed and unconstitutional. The dispute now sets the stage for another legal and political showdown within ODM, with the courts expected to determine whether the party followed due process in removing one of its top officials.
